Just like massage, chiropractors utilize a variety of chiropractic techniques in how they adjust your spine. There are two basic schools - the traditional school and the new school. The former relies more on pressure and impact whereas the latter is more about positioning, contortion and stretches to get your body to pop. Both are successful and really chiropractic techniques are more of an artform utilized by each doctor than they are a science.
There is one other major category of chiropractic techniques though that has recently come into being and that is Network Spinal Analysis. Although there was much controversy over it when it first came out about a decade ago, this technique relies more on signaling the patient towards postural changes utilizing light touches. These positions are memorized by the brain and then recalled later to self-regulate. So, in these chiropractic techniques - the patient heals themselves rather than depending on others and is more aware.
Overall, either form of chiropractic is good than not doing anything. I have been seeing NSA for a while and it is actually pretty cool, althoug sometimes I need a good crack in the neck to just straighten me out :).
